What Causes Arthritis?
Did you know that if you are suffering from arthritis ...
you’re certainly not alone.
In people over fifty-five years old in industrialized countries, arthritis is the main
cause of disability. It affects the musculoskeletal system, especially the joints
and causes pain through inflammation.
The word arthritis comes from the Greek arthron meaning "joint" and the Latin
itis meaning "inflammation".
Arthritis is actually a term covering over 100 medical conditions. Although some types of arthritis can strike people at a very early age, the most common form, Osteoarthritis, generally affects the elderly.
It All Starts At The Joints ...
A joint is obviously the place where bones join together ... where one bone moves against another.
Where they touch each other, the bones surfaces are covered with cartilage, to stop them actually rubbing together. It acts as a cushion to allow the joint to work smoothly.
The two bones are held together by ligaments, which are like tough elastic bands, and they hold your bones where they should be while your muscles relax or contract to make the joint move.
The joints are surrounded by a capsule type structure and the cavity around the joint is filled with synovial fluid, which nourishes both the joint and the cartilage.
Arthritis starts when something goes wrong with the joint, and that depends on what type of arthritis you have.
Maybe you have a lack of fluid, your cartilage is wearing away, you have developed an autoimmune response (your body attacking itself), an infection or a combination of different factors.

Arthritis Can Be Caused By Multiple Things From Genetics To Infection.
Your Age
As you get older you are more likely to develop arthritis due to your cartilage becoming more brittle with age and having less of a capacity to repair itself.
Your Weight
Joint damage can be made worse depending on the weight the joint has to carry, so excess body weight can cause problems and lead to arthritis. The hips and knees can wear very quickly in heavier people.
Your Genetics
Scientists don’t actually know how much genetics play a part in the cause of arthritis, but they believe there may be genetic variations which contribute to the cause.
Any Previous Injuries You May Have Had
Previous injuries can help to cause arthritis. A good example of an injury leading to arthritis would be a tibial plateau fracture, where the broken part of the bone enters the cartilage of the knee joint.
Illness or Infection
Things like repeated gout, a septic joint infection or certain other medical conditions, can cause arthritis of the joint.
Certain Sports You May Be Involved In
Participation in certain sports can cause injuries to your joints, which can then cause arthritis. However, there are obviously many great benefits to participating in sports activities, so it’s well worth continuing.
There Are Many Types Of Arthritis
Actually, there are over 100 types of arthritis, but here are some of the most common types:
-
Rheumatoid arthritis:
The inflammatory form of arthritis. This is when the synovial membrane is attacked, which causes swelling and pain. What makes it worse is that if it is left untreated it can lead to deformity. It is more common in women than men and usually takes hold in ages between 40 and 60. However, children and the elderly may also be affected.
Joints, usually the smaller ones first, become painfully swollen, inflamed, stiff, tender when touched and arms, legs, fingers and wrists are most commonly affected. Symptoms tend to be at their worst on waking up in the morning and hands may be red and puffy. Rheumatoid arthritis sufferers tend to feel tired most of the time and a loss of weight is common.
-
Osteoarthritis:
This is when your cartilage loses its elasticity which means it becomes stiff and becomes damaged far more easily. As the cartilage acts as a shock absorber, when it wears away from being too brittle, the tendons and ligaments become stretched, causing pain. If it goes too far, the bones can start rubbing against each other, which will cause extreme pain.
The symptoms will come on slowly and gradually get worse. During or after use or even after a period of inactivity, the joint will be painful. There is pain, tenderness and stiffness in the joints and sometimes ‘grating’ and swelling can be experienced when the joint is used.
-
Infectious or septic arthritis:
This is when there’s an infection, caused by bacteria, fungi or a virus, in the synovial fluid and tissues of a joint. The infection from nearby infected tissue could spread to a joint. Symptoms include a fever, joint inflammation and swelling, tenderness and/or a sharp pain. The knee, shoulder, elbow, wrist and fingers are most commonly affected.
What You Should Know About Medications
Available For Arthritis
Recent FDA Warning
Avoid nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) increase the risk of developing duodenal or stomach ulcers.
Avoid with history of kidney or liver damage because NSAIDs may increase the risk of developing kidney or liver failure.
Avoid with indigestion or heartburn NSAIDs increase upset stomach or indigestion.
Avoid in patients who consume three or more alcoholic drinks daily, heavy drinkers have an increased risk of developing liver damage and stomach bleeding from NSAIDs.
Use cautiously if pregnant or breastfeeding.
NSAIDs may damage the heart or blood flow of the fetus or newborn baby if they are taken regularly during the last few months of pregnancy. Some animal studies have shown that if NSAIDs are taken late in pregnancy, they may increase the length of pregnancy, prolong labor, or cause complications during delivery. Pregnant mothers should consult a qualified healthcare provider before taking NSAIDs. Although NSAIDs have not been shown to cause medical problems in breastfeeding babies, diclofenac (Cataflam® Voltaren®-XR), diflunisal (Dolobid®), fenoprofen (Nalfon®), flurbiprofen (Ansaid®), meclofenamate (Meclofenamate sodium®), mefenamic acid (Ponstel®), naproxen (Aleve®), piroxicam (Feldene®), and tolmetin (Tolectin® or Tolectin® DS) can pass into breast milk. Caution is warranted.
Medical Study Report
John Breitner of the Veterans Affairs medical facility and the University of Washington quoted that a study of 2,500 patients using anti-inflammatory they noted 70 people suffered stroke or heart attack. There were 23 deaths and the patients were 50 percent more likely to have some sort of cardiovascular events among patients taking the anti-inflammatory naproxen than among those taking placebo, he said.
Given the fact that all anti-inflammatory manufacturers have extensive warnings on their labels it is evident you should limit your exposure to any of these medications by taking the lowest possible dosage and for the shortest possible time.
The FDA is warning you, the manufacturer of the products are warning you and there are numerous studies showing you the dangers. You will probably suffer some sort of negative side effect if you are using these medications long term and the risk to your health is extremely high.
